Marjorie (Vicars) McKim Born Marjorie Louise White on March 10, 1914 in Summerland, Marjorie McKim passed away peacefully on December 18, 2008 in Edmonton. Marjorie lived in Kamloops for most of her 94 years. She attended the University of Alberta in the 1930s but her education was interrupted by the Depression. She returned to Kamloops and worked in the family business, the Kamloops Daily Sentinel. Her father Ralph E. White was the long-time owner/publisher of the Sentinel and co-founder of the first radio station in Kamloops, and she worked in both media before the war, hosting a radio program on cooking. Marjorie and Hugh Vicars were married in 1937. Hugh and his brother Desmond ran Vicars Bros. Ranch in Valleyview. After the men returned from overseas, Vicars Bros. operated an orchard on what is now Vicars Road, which was a popular spot for locals to come for their supply of fresh Macs every fall. Mum made the best apple pies ever! Marjorie was busy with farm and family, but found time to be active in the community with St. Paul's Cathedral, Meals on Wheels, and other volunteer work, both in Kamloops and during the war in Vancouver. She was a Girl Guide commissioner and a long-time member of the P.E.O. The whole family enjoyed spending the summers in Sorrento. She truly loved her time there and will be remembered by all for her fondness for entertaining friends and family both at the lake and in Kamloops.
