Passed peacefully away in the arms of his family on 05 Jan. 2010 after a long, happy and active life, Gerald Ewart Knight of Moreton’s Hr., age 90. He is predeceased by his wife Kathleen (Kay) Hollett (2000), son Wayne (1975) and brothers Thomas, Irvin, Harry and Bill. He is survived by five children: Carl Knight (Gander), daughter-in-law (Joan Hicks - St. John’s), Glenys (Don Pelkey) - Saint Andrews, NB, Janet (Doug Morgan), St. John\'s, Robert (Brenda Bishop), St. John’s, Kathy Knight (Wayne Morgan), St. John’s; nine grandchildren: Jennifer Knight, David Pelkey, Jane Pelkey (Dave Hare), Brian Pelkey, Robert Pelkey, Heather Morgan (Anthony Berardinelli), Stephanie Morgan, Tim Knight, Robyn Knight; two great-grandchildren: Lily and Adelyn Hare; brother Frank Knight, Grand Falls; special friends Thelma and Terry Wheeler, John and Kathy Sheldon and Louise Osmond. Born in Montreal in 1919, he grew up in Moreton\'s Hr., was educated at Prince of Wales College, MUN and graduated from Nova Scotia Technical College with Honors in Engineering. He finished a distinguished career with Federal Public Works as Regional Manager, Atlantic Region. He was instrumental in the design and construction of almost all of NL’s marine infrastructure from Nain to the St. John’s waterfront. He was also first Deputy-Mayor of Mount Pearl, member Mount Pearl Lions Club, Past-President of St. John’s Curling Club and avid sailor without fear.
He met and married Kay while working in Argentia during WWII. They spent their lives in Argentia, Corner Brook, St. John’s, Halifax and Moreton’s Hr. They enjoyed lots of friends and family during these years and their lives touched many. After retirement to Moreton’s Hr., they stayed active renovating the family homestead, sailing in the summers, skidooing in winter and enjoyed frequent family visits and celebrations.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Moreton’s Hr. Museum or 5SB Urology Education Fund, Eastern Health. At Dad’s wishes, his cremation will be followed by visitation at Barrett\'s Funeral Home, Hamilton Ave., St. John\'s on Sunday, 10 Jan 2010 from 2-5 p.m. A Celebration of Life service is to be held in Moreton’s Hr. United Church on 22 May 2010.
