Veleda Vivian Malcolm (nee McKinney) passed away surrounded by her family at Ponderosa Lodge on Monday, July 30th, 2012.
Veleda was born to Bernard Malcolm and Lizzie Hopfe on her family’s farm, in Strome, Alberta, April 2nd, 1921. She went to school in Wavey Lake, then helped out on the farm. In 1940 she took practical nurses training at Edmonton’s University Hospital. There she met the love of her life, Maurice Malcolm. Veleda and Maurice were married November 5th, 1943 and moved around a lot as Maurice furthered his career in construction. In 1962 Veleda and Maurice settled in Kamloops. Veleda had many jobs, Bob’s PX, cooking in restaurants and raising her three beloved children; Catherine Giorio, Moe (Mickey) Malcolm, Perry (Colleen) Malcolm all residing in Kamloops. Veleda also enjoyed selling Mary Kay, which she did for over twenty years.
Veleda always enjoyed when visitors stopped by - she had an open door policy. Whether it was family or friends, her table was always full. She especially enjoyed when any of her seven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild would come to visit, she would say, “They bring me new life.”
Veleda is one of fifteen children, and is survived by three of her sisters, Eve Reeder, Helen Brooks, Peggy ( Bob) Johnson, one brother Ike (Rita) McKinney, one brother-in-law Max Davies. She will also be missed by her dear friend Lucille Wallace.
Veleda was predeceased by her mother, father, four sisters and six brothers.
The family wishes to extend a Special Thank You to Dr. Malan, the nurses and staff of the Ponderosa Lodge, 2nd floor West. We cannot thank you enough for the special care you gave our Mother, Sister, Grandmother and Friend.
A Memorial Service was held at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 4, 2012 in the Kamloops Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend LeAnn Blackert officiating.
