ALVIN LLOYD GRUNERT .April 2, 1925 - August 5, 2009 It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Al Grunert on August 5, 2009 at Royal Inland Hospital at the age of 84 years. Al grew up on a farm in Yorkton, Saskatchewan. He eventually moved to Vancouver and spent 30 years working as an Oakalla Farm prison guard. He moved to Kamloops in October 2000. Al is predeceased by his wife, Lydia (2007) of nearly 60 years. They met in Vancouver just before the Second World War after Al left the family farm in Yorkton. He is survived by his two sons, Bruce (Janice) and grandchildren Matthew, Luke and Daniel; Howard (Karen) and grandchildren Micah, Jesse and Chad; and his dear friend Gena Vipond; friends Rick and Gloria Chapman; Hearle Vreeland and other friends at Berwick on the Park. In memory of his wife Lydia, Alvin generously created a legacy of learning and leadership at TRU by donating an endowment scholarship for the top students in each of every faculty and school at Thompson Rivers University. He and his wife Lydia always valued the importance of education and Al wanted to carry out his wife's desire to make post secondary education a reality for those who might not otherwise afford it. There will be a Graveside Service for Alvin on Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in the family plot, Hillside Cemetery. Should friends desire, donations in Al's memory may be made to the Thompson Rivers University Foundation (The Alvin & Lydia Grunert Scholarship), 900 McGill Road, Kamloops, B.C. V2C 5W3. On-line condolences may be expressed at http://www.schoenings.com. Arrangements entrusted to Schoening Funeral Service, telephone 250-374-1454
