NEU, GERHARD 'Gert' 1931 - 2009 After a courageous battle with cancer, Opa left us on June 29 surrounded by his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Maria, of 52 years, sons Stephan (Diana) Neu, Ralph (Terry) Neu, daughter Sonja (Clint) Dempster and the absolute lights of his life, his seven grandchildren: Kirsten (Tony), Toni, Amanda, Chelsey (Matt), Calvin, Derrick, and Taylor. He is also survived by brother Rudolf and sisters Gerda and Helga, as well as the Krauseneck, Langner and Schubel families. He is predeceased by his mother and father, his brother Herman, his sister Ruth and his brother-in-law Heinz. Gert was born in Gornow, Germany on December 13, 1931. After the war he settled in Rheinfelden, Germany where he met and married the love of his life Maria. In 1960, Gert moved Maria and their first son Stephan to Canada. They settled in the Deadman Valley and after 2 years moved to Savona. Gert worked as a faller for a few years and then went to work for Savona Timber, which in turn became Evans Products and eventually Ainsworth Lumber. After 30 years Gert retired in 1994. He enjoyed each and every day of his retirement. He was a talented artist and craftsman, making among other things, candles, clocks and juniper lamps. He also enjoyed fishing and spending time at his beloved cabin in the Deadman Valley. He took pride in his German club Schlaraffia and spending time with his family and numerous friends. Opa was very proud of his family and put them first and foremost in everything that he did. Opa will be greatly missed by all and will remain forever in our hearts. "Und bis zum Letzten atemzug Lass uns Schlaraffen bleiben. Lulu" No service by request. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kidney Foundation in Gert's name
