Hazel Melrose Gillis of Sydney Mines passed away at the Northside General Hospital on Jan. 12, 2010.
Born in Point Aconi, July 19, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Bob and Maggie (McCready) Forrest.
Hazel was a member of Calvin United Church, New Waterford.
She received a great amount of joy from being surrounded by family; they truly were her life.
She is survived by two sons, Carter (Donna) and their daughter Ashley, Glace Bay, J.R. (Sue), Lower Sackville; brother, Wayne (Margaret Ann) Forrest, Point Aconi; sisters, Greta (Nate) Davison, North Sydney, Stephanie Laffin, Sydney Mines, Roberta Marsh, Point Aconi; three special granddaughters, Jenny (David), Maggie, Liz and the light of her life, great-grandson, Jordan. Hazel was much loved by many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Jimmy Gillis, daughter, Heather, sister, Norma White, a brother in infancy, as well as three brothers-in-law, Hector White, Gerald Marsh and Kevin Laffin.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral service will be held Jan. 16, 2010, at 11 a.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Burial will follow in Point Aconi Cemetery.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
