Doris grew up on Fairholme farm in Little Bras D’Or. After attending Central School in North Sydney, she went on to complete business training in Truro. Working in Halifax, she met her future husband and after their marriage, took up residence in Toronto, while he completed his doctorate. Moving back to Halifax in 1956, she immersed herself in raising her family, volunteer work and supporting her husband in his writing and teaching career. She spent many hours conducting archival research, and typing galleys for her husband’s book, “The Rising Village. An avid sports fan, Doris also enjoyed reading, painting, beach walking, puzzle solving and playing golf, bridge and ‘original rules’ scrabble. Blessed with 20 wonderful years in Petite Riviere with Mac, her life there involved more time for volunteer activities at the church and her many interests, including the co-founding of 1st Petite Riviere Girl Guides. A much beloved grandmother to her grandchildren, she was becoming known as ‘Nana the Great’ to the great-grandchildren.
Special thanks to medical staff of South Shore Regional for their compassionate care and also to her caring friends and neighbours for their many kindnesses over the last months.
As requested, a private family graveside service will be held at a later date.
