With broken hearts we, the family of Hughena MacIntyre, 74, of Cliff Street, Glace Bay, announce her passing on Monday, Oct. 22, 2012. Hughena passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Glace Bay, Hughena was the daughter of the late James and Sarah (Waye) Whalen.
Hughena’s first love was her family to which she devoted her entire life. She had a zest for travel and was a very proud Cape Bretoner who visited every province and territory in the country. She resided in Ottawa for two 10-year periods and their three children were born there.
Her greatest attribute was her compassion and sense of humour, both of which she shared lovingly with family and friends.
She was a devoted member of Holy Cross parish, where she happily married “My Allie” in 1959 and renewed those vows in 1984 and again in 2009.
Hughena will be sadly missed by her loving husband of 53 years, Allie; and their children, Alana, Michael (Carla) and Debbie; her cherished grandchildren, Devon, Breanna, Samantha and Jessica. Also surviving are her brothers, Joe, Lou (Patsy) and Rannie (Marilyn); sisters, Mary Lou (Art) Billard, Neena Fowler, Lucy Jackson; brother-in-law, John MacIntyre; many nieces, nephews and very special niece, Debi Billard; special in-laws, Karen MacLean, Ernie Jackson, Pauline Chevrier, Ruth Whalen and Myrna Wilson.
Besides her parents, Hughena was predeceased by brothers, Junior and Hank, sisters, Velma Wadden, Ursula Hynes, brothers-in-law, Dave Hynes, Duncan Fowler, Lawrence Wadden, also sister-in-law, Cathy MacIntyre.
Visitation will be held in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012, at Holy Cross Church, Seaview Street, Glace Bay, with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall. Cremation will take place with interment at a later date in St. Anne's Cemetery, Glace Bay.
Memorial donations in Hughena’s memory may be made to the palliative care unit.
