Rosalie Isabel Jay
Passed on: April 19th, 2008
Aged 81, at Halifax, passed away peacefully April 19, 2008, at the infirmary site surrounded by her family. Born at home in Little Pond, P.E.I., on May 15, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Charles MacDonald and Mary Sophia MacInnis. She defied the medical odds from the beginning, weighing three pounds at birth and needing to be placed in the warming oven as an improvised incubator. She attended school in Little Pond, then on to Prince of Wales, for high school. She earned her teacher’s licence and, as a teenager, taught in one-room schools in rural Prince Edward Island. She was employed by Island Tel as an operator, and was transferred to Maritime Tel and Tel, as a supervisor, in Operator Services, in 1953 where she continued as a part-time employee until her retirement in 1991. During drives back to the Island on the weekends in the early 1950’s, Giles Jay caught her eye and captured her heart. She will be sadly missed by her loving husband of 51 years. She was loved by son, Wayne Jay and daughter-in-law, Gail (Saunders); daughters, Karen Jay and son-in-law, John Flinn, and daughter, Donna Jay and son-in-law, Gilles Melanson. She was a loving and attentive ‘Grandma’ to Morgan Muise, Ila and Emma Jay and Jacob Melanson, and played an active role in their ‘before after school’ care. She enjoyed cheering them on in the curling rink, the soccer pitch and the concert hall. She will be missed by her sisters, Bernadette Macdonald (John S.), Cardigan and Eileen MacKenzie (Louis), Little Pond and brother Norbert MacDonald (Pat), Hamilton and sister-in-law, Joyce Murphy (Dunstan) Ottawa, and brother-in-law, Ken Jay (Mary), Charlottetown. She is also survived by step-grandchildren Crystal, Leah and Kelly Flinn and many nieces and newphews. She enjoyed her many visits from her niece, Barbara Sullivan, who brought her much comfort. She was a loyal friend and active participant in Saint Stephen’s Parish for over 50 years. She enjoyed many roles in the Catholic Women’s League, bringing grace and diplomacy to her three terms as CWL president. She was predeceased by her son, James Paul Jay; brothers, John James “Jack” MacDonald, Francis Joseph “Frank” MacDonald, Bernard Allison MacDonald and Charles Bedford MacDonald; sisters, Kathleen Patrinella “Kay” Kelly and Sr. Carmel MacDonald. Visitation will take place at Snow’s Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., Halifax, Wednesday, April 23, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A celebration of her life, will take place at Blessed Mother Teresa Parish (formerly St. Stephen’s) at the corner of Robie Street and Normandy Dr., Halifax, on Thursday, April 24 at 1 p.m. Donations in memory, may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
