Rhoda Evon (Baker) O'Brien

Rhoda Evon (Baker) O'Brien, 92, of Truro Heights - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loving mother on Sunday, October 28th, 2012 at Willow Lodge in Tatamagouche, NS. Born in Moncton, March 18th 1920, she was the daughter of the late Edward Millard and Jenny May (Brown) Baker, twin of beloved sister, the late Reta (Baker) Mitchell. Rhoda loved socializing with her family, friends and being active in her church. She was a lifelong member of the Salvation Army where she played baritone in the band and blended her beautiful alto voice at every singing opportunity. A gifted seamstress and accomplished knitter, her friends and family were happy recipients of her special creations, especially the treasured “Nanny knit socks”. She was active in the community as a member of the Koffee 'n Krafts bible study group; a KOPS member of the TOPS organization; a Past Noble Grand of the Diamond Rebekah Lodge No 15, Truro; member of LOBA, Truro chapter; and member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the IOOF Cantons. Together with her husband the late Earl G. O'Brien, they served as superintendent and matron of the Odd Fellows Home in Pictou for many years. Predeceased by her devoted husband Earl Goodwin O'Brien, her son Earl Goodwin O'Brien Jr., sisters Eva Scott, Ruth deGrobois, Olive Utus, Mildred Fraser, Doris Saleski and Reta Mitchell (twin), sister-in-law Mildred Baker, brother-in-law Edward Fraser, sons-in-law Harry Herring and Douglas Lummiss. She is survived and will be sadly missed by sister June (Aldo) Tonini, London ON; brother Edward Baker, Florida; brother-in-law George Saleski, Dartmouth. Children, Jane Herring, Truro, NS; Wilma Lummiss, Port Sydney, ON; Nova (John) Campbell, Waterloo, ON and Doretta (Gary) Macdonald, Dartmouth, NS; 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, Sharon Langridge and the many friends and neighbours who were so dear to her. Visitation will be held at Mattatall-Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, on Thursday, November 1, from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. The Diamond Rebekah Lodge No 15 will hold a public memorial service at 7:15 pm on Thursday. Funeral services will be held on Friday, November, 2, 11:00 am at the Salvation Army Citadel, Outram Street, Truro. Captain Stephen McNeilly officiating, reception at the Citadel and interment to follow at the Riverside Cemetery, Wallace Bay.
