It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our matriarch Rhoda, our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister and aunt on Wednesday, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Mom always said her family was her greatest accomplishment and her legacy will live on in all of us.
Rhoda was born Rhodina Joan, daughter of the late Michael & Mayme MacNeil of MacLeod’s Crossing and spent her entire life in Reserve Mines.
Rhoda in her earlier years worked for Cara Services, Sydney Airport and was instrumental in organizing the workers, serving as their union president until she retired.
Mom was a devout Catholic and was very involved in St Joseph’s parish, Reserve Mines serving on various committees and a proud member of the choir.
She held many pastimes close to her heart, especially bowling and knitting, which she sent most of to the Reserve Elementary School.
She is survived by her children, Neil (Marion) MacPhee, Anne (Claude) Courchesne, Nita McIntyre, Jerry (Donna) MacPhee, and Cecil (Valerie) Cameron.
Also left to mourn is her sister, Margarite (Sis) McLellen, Big Pond and brother, Ronnie McNeil, Oakville, Ont. and numerous nieces and nephews.
Rhoda was a very proud “Nan” to 19 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Michael MacPhee and second husband, John Cameron; sisters, Mary, Katherine, Theresa, Marionita; brothers, Joe, Michael and daughter-in-law, Jean.
The last 10 years of mom’s life was spent in her second home, Seaview Manor. There is no way we could ever thank the staff or her “Special Angels” who cared for mom with love, respect and support.
Visitation for Rhoda will be on Sunday, Dec. 2, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Curry’s Funeral Home ,775 Main St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be held at St Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines, at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 3, 2012. the Rev Daniel Boudreau will be officiating.
Donations may be made to Seaview Manor Nursing Home.
