Hazel Burns
Born In: Sydney River
Passed on: November 30th, 2012
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Hazel Agnes Burns, 96, on Nov. 30, 2012 at Valley View Villa, Riverton, N.S. with her daughters by her side.
Born in Sydney River, Hazel was the youngest daughter of the late Murray and Ida (Boutilier) Lewis.
She was a member of St. George’s Anglican Church in Sydney, where she was a choir member and active member of the ACW, before moving to New Glasgow. Mom attended St. George’s Anglican Church in New Glasgow, whenever possible, while living at Garden Suites. In 2005, mom moved to Valley View Villa. She was a founding member of the Atlantic Thrift Club in Sydney. These were neighbours who got together once a week to play cards, and they carried on this special bond of friendship for over 60 years. Mom had great faith, courage and determination. When she broke her back in 1970, she was never expected to walk again. Mom was an inspiration to patients and staff over the many months she was hospitalized in Halifax. She never gave up and, with months of therapy, was able to resume a somewhat normal life.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her beloved and devoted husband of 64 years, Walter; sisters, Muriel Cossitt and Violet Lewis; brother, Lloyd Lewis and sons-in-law, Jim Bailey and Graham Holman.
She was a loving and caring mother to her daughters, Franklyn Holman (Ray Baines) and Murida ‘Meda’ Bailey of New Glasgow. She will be greatly missed by grandchildren, John (Kathy) Holman, Debbie (John) van Vulpen, James (Janet) Bailey, Dana (Michael) Durgin, and Kirk (Nichole) Bailey; great-grandchildren, Malorie (Andrew) Weir, Scott Holman, Kaylee van Vulpen, Jared, Jacob, Gabrielle, Mary, and Christina Bailey; step-great-grandchildren, Isaiah, Elizabeth, Naomi and Rebekah Durgin; great-great-grandson, Milo Weir; nephews, Roy (Georgie) Cossitt, and Bob (Betty) Cossitt; and niece, Roberta (John) Hancock.
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel, 49 Welton St., Sydney, from 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 2. Funeral service will be held at The Church of Christ the King on Monday at 11:30 a.m. Interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Chris Elliot and staff on second floor of Valley View Villa for the excellent care she received.
Family flowers only. Donations may be made in Hazel’s memory to Valley View Villa Bus Fund, 6125 Trafalgar Rd., RR #1 Stellarton, NS B0K 1S0 or to a charity of your choice.
