BURRELL, WINIFRED – Surrounded by her loving family we announce the passing of Winifred (Waller) Burrell which occurred peacefully at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Thursday, December 6th, 2012. Born in 1924 in Sheffield, England, Winnie was the daughter of the late George and Florence (Hattersley) Waller. She served with the Land Army in March – Cambridgeshire, England during the second world war where she met and married her husband Guy before coming to Canada in 1946. In the early years, Winifred was devoted to raising her five daughters. Later she worked outside the home at Sobeys and retired from Sears Warehouse in 1985. Guy and Winnie attended St. Lukes Anglican Church where they were longstanding members of the young married couples club. In their later years they attended Portland United Church. Mom volunteered for Meals On Wheels and The Saint John Regional Hospital Auxillary (Gift Shop). Mom was a member of the Overseas War Brides Association and the Fairview Bowling league. Mom along with Dad, was an avid card player for many years at St. Joachim’s, Saint Anne’s and the Lorneville Community Center. Winifred is survived by her loving husband Guy of 66 years; daughters Christine Montague (Kevin) of Fredericton, Jacqueline Gilliland (George) of Quispamsis, Joan Manning (Tom) of Quispamsis, Cathy Scott (Ken) of Edmonton, AB, Wendy Kunitzky (Jerry) of Saint John; brother George Waller (Joyce) of Sheffield, England; grandchildren Jonathan, Megan, Chris, Michael, Heather, Ron, Vanessa, Jillian, Nicholas, Morgan, and Sarah; great-grandchildren Paidon, Ryan, Eric, Madeline, and Georgia; nephews, and many friends. Besides her parents, Winifred was predeceased by her sister Florence Jones.
Arrangements are under the direction of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424) with visitation being held on Monday, December 10th from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held from the Fundy Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, December 11th at 11 a.m. Donations in Winifred’s memory may be made to Hospice or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
