Mitchell, Elmore “Bernice”, 91 of Fundy Villa, Berwick, Kings Co. passed away Thursday, Dec. 06, 2012 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in (Lydgate) Lockeport, Nov. 05, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin & Emma (Sperry) MacKenzie of East Green Harbor. After taking a hairdressing course in Liverpool, she worked in Bridgetown, where she met & married Roy in 1947. She later operated a hairdressing shop out of their home in Waterville for some twenty years. Bernice was a member of the Berwick Legion Auxiliary & Waterville United Church & choir. She & Roy retired to Margaretsville in 1974. She enjoyed swimming, bowling, bingo, playing cards. Bernice & Roy camped, hunted & fished often during their life together. She was always very interested in & played an active part in her family & grandchildren’s lives, achievements & sporting activities. She enjoyed yard sales & day trips & summer breaks at Lockeport cottages with Laura for many years. Bernice resided at Fundy Villa Berwick, assisted living facility since 2008. She is survived by daughter, Laura (Wayne) Hirtle, Coldbrook; son, John (Deb), Port Alberni, B.C.; grandchildren, Jason (Jolie), Calgary; Todd, (Dionne), Calgary; Joni ( Trent), Calgary ;Craig, (Nicole), Port Alberni, B.C. ; Lisa, St. John’s Nfld.; Jeffrey, Somerset; numerous great grandchildren, nephews & nieces ;sisters, Beulah (Pennell) Richardson, Bridgewater and Gussie (Clark) Hennigar, Halifax. Bernice was predeceased by her husband, Roy in 1993; son, Charles in 1981; sisters, Eileen (Ron) Loewe’en, B.C.; Onie (Les) Sutherland, Lockeport; brother, Les (Marge) Mac Kenzie, Chester. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life service was held from 2:00 - 4p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8th in the Annapolis Valley Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, 34 Coldbrook Village Park Dr., Coldbrook (Exit 14). Private family interment at a later date in Melvern Square Cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations in memory may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, Valley Regional Hospital or to a charity of choice.
