Daniel Campbell ‘Nipper’, 73, Sydney, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Whitney Pier, he was a son of the late Maurice and Sarah (Reid) Campbell.
Dan worked most of his working life as an employee of the Sydney Steel Plant, retiring in 1991. He also operated a small business providing building janitorial services.
Dan was an adherent of Bethel Presbyterian Church. A man of deep faith and compassion. His deep love and devotion to his loving wife, Dorothy was openly shared to his family and friends. He was most proud of his three children and five grandchildren. He was also very proud to have been a member of the 1951 Ward Six Indians, the championship team of the first Little League in Canada. He greatly enjoyed sharing with his former teammates, their induction into the Cape Breton Sports Hall of Fame in 2011.
Besides spending time with his family and in worship, his greatest joy was watching the Toronto Blue Jays. He was able to watch a 1993 Championship World Series game in person in Toronto. Dan enjoyed walking several miles each day around his neighbourhood and looked forward to greeting friends and neighbours on his route.
Dan is survived by loving wife, Dorothy (MacIntyre); sons, Reid (Eleanor), Halifax, Blaise (Deana Huntsbarger), Garden Hill, Ont., and Rachel MacKinnon (Troy); grandchildren, David, Sarah Kate, Daniel, Chloe and Ella; brothers, Maurice ‘Dick’ and Eddie; sisters, Suzanne ‘Suzie’ Gray and Juanita Morykot; brother-in-law, David MacIntyre, (Lois) Ipswich, Massachusetts; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Billy and Sears, sister Bessie, a sibling in infancy, sister-in-law, Anna Andrews and brother-in-law, Ewen MacIntrye.
The family will receive visitors Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. Funeral service will be held Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Bethel Presbyterian Church, Sydney, with Rev. Robert Lyle officiating. Interment to follow at Gabarus Lake Zion United Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Benelovent Fund.
