George Isaac Smith, 58, of Truro died in the new Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, on Christmas Day, after a very short battle against aggressive lung/brain cancer. Born in Truro on January 26, 1954, George was a son of the late Senator G. I. Smith and Sarah Hobart (Archibald) Smith. He was educated in Truro Schools and at Mount Allison University. For many years he worked in the hospitality industry in Halifax. Later he joined the provincial Department of Justice as a Deputy Sheriff, primarily in the Halifax Court System. More recently he has worked in the Security business in and around Truro. At the time of his death he was employed at the Dalhousie Faculty of Agriculture (formerly Nova Scotia Agriculture College).He was the newly elected President of Local 92, Nova Scotia Government Employees Union, in which capacity he worked to protect the pensions of Nova Scotia Agricultural College faculty and staff, and to protect and maintain the mandate and independence of Local 92. He recently represented Local 92 before the Law Amendments Committee of the Nova Scotia Legislature. George was a good friend of Bill W. He inherited the photography bug from his father and was known for his photos of Colchester County landmarks and scenery. He was also an avid golfer.

Besides his parents, George was predeceased by his former wife, Gloria Zwicker. Surviving are brother Rob (Doralee) Smith, Waverley and sister Alison (Alan) MacLean, Truro. Also surviving are his niece and nephews to whom he was devoted: Sarah (Aaron) Emery, Toronto; Andy MacLean and Isaac Smith, both of Halifax Regional Municipality.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of George’s life will take place on Monday, Dec 31st at 11 am in First United Church, Truro, with Rev. Valerie Kingsbury officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Arrangements are under the direction of Mattatall~Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro.
