LEAVITT, ELVA LYDIA - Elva Lydia Leavitt, 98, passed away peacefully January 5, 2013, surrounded by her loving family. She was born September 27, 1914 in Belleville, New Brunswick, the daughter of the late Claude and Alice McBride. Elva graduated from the Provincial Normal School in Fredericton, New Brunswick and taught for many years in the province. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary and Lancaster Branch 69, Royal Canadian Legion, and a Life Member of the Saint John Regional Hospital Auxiliary where she was recognized for dedication of over seven thousand hours. She enjoyed playing Auction Forty-Five with a number of senior groups, reading, camping at Jellystone Park and travelling with her family to such places as Old Orchard Beach, Maine, New York City and Florida. Elva is survived by her daughter, Deborah Adams; grandsons, Gregory Adams and his wife Stephanie; James Adams and Benjamin Adams; great-grandchildren, Brianne and Landon. She is also survived by her nephew James McBride of Portland, Maine. Elva was predeceased by her husband Frederick John Leavitt; brother, Rankin McBride; and her parents.
Arrangements are under the direction of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John. Following cremation, visitation will take place on Friday, January 11, 2013 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 7:00 to 9:00 PM. A memorial service for the Ladies Auxiliary and Branch will be held on Friday at 7:00 PM. A celebration of Elva’s life will be held at Portland United Church, 50 Newport Crescent, Saint John on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 10:00 AM. Interment will take place at Cedar Hill Extension “Field Of Honour,” Saint John West. A reception will follow in the Church Parlour. For those who wish, remembrances to Portland United Church, 50 Newport Crescent, Saint John, NB E2K 1Y5, would be appreciated by the family.
