It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of our father, grandfather and uncle, Frank S. Barnes, age 95, a longtime resident of Clifford Street., North Sydney, on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013 at the Northside Community Guest Home.
Born in North Sydney, Frank was the son of the late James and Rebecca (Billard) Barnes. He was employed as a postal worker with Canada Post until his retirement. He was veteran of the Second World War serving with the Canadian Army as a Sergeant of the Royal Canadian Artillery. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #19, North Sydney, a member of Kiwanis Golden K Club and played an active role in the Meals on Wheels program. Frank was a member of the AOTS Mens Club, a church elder and a choir member for many years at St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney.
Frank is survived by his daughters, Sandra Barnes and Debra Briand; also his granddaughter, Catherine Briand, all of North Sydney and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He was predeceased by his wife, Iris (Beck) Barnes in 2009; two sisters, Mary ‘Mame’ Penny and Marjorie Boutilier.
There will be no visitation by request. A funeral service for Frank will be held 11 a.m. Monday Jan. 14, 2013 at St. Matthew Wesley United Church with Rev. David Luker officiating. Burial will take place at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the Northside Community Guest Home.
