Eugene Sampson passed away peacefully into the presence of his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on Monday, Jan. 28, 2013, at home surrounded by his family after a courageous six year battle with cancer.
Born Oct. 18, 1925, in Louisdale to the late Felix and Emilie Ann (Marchard) Samson.
He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
A carpenter by trade, he helped whoever whenever he could, no job was too small or too big — always putting others before himself.
He retired from Sydney Steel in 1987 after 36 years of service. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church, Sydney, where he faithfully served his Lord and church family.
Eugene is survived by his devoted wife, Doris (Howell Gauthier) of 27 years; sons, Frankie (Mary), Bolton, Ont., Jerry (Valarie), South Bar, Donald Wayne (Debbie), Brampton, Ont.; daughters, Sylvia (Wally) Jackson, Cole Harbour, Marilyn (the late Sonny) Burke, Lynden, Ont., Donna (Tom) Drover, South Bar, and stepson, Donald Gauthier, South Bar; brother, Frank, Ottawa; sisters-in-law, Irene Sampson, Louisdale, and Mary Sampson, Port Hawkesbury; 17 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Joseph, Felix, Wilfred, Paul, Jerry and sisters, Mary, Jennie and Bertha.
Visitation will be held today (Wednesday, Jan. 30) at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will take place Thursday. Jan. 31 at 2:30 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Kevin Richardson officiating.
Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the Cape Breton Regional Cancer Center or charity of one’s choice.
Special thanks to Continuing Care, CB Homemakers, Palliative Care and VON for making it possible for Dad to remain at home, watching the sunsets and ferry crossings from his favourite chair in the living room. Your professionalism, kindness and care was much appreciated.
