Norma J. (Millett) Mosher
Mosher, Norma J. (Millett) - 86, Truro, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on January 28, 2013 at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born January 31, 1926 in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late Della Mary Horton and Ralph Starr Millett. Norma attended St. James United Church in Upper Musquodoboit and later joined First United Church, Truro. She served on the Group Committee of St. James United, taught Sunday School and was a member of the UCW. At First United she was a member of the UCW and served on the Committee of Stewards. Norma served as Municipal Councillor for the County of Halifax from 1964 - 68; was a member of the Halifax County Municipal School Board and Halifax County Library Board during that time; was Vice-Chairman of the Dartmouth Regional Vocational School at the time of its opening (currently I.W. Akerley Campus of NSCC); also served as President of the Tri-County Council of Boy Scouts. She was a member of the Women's Institute of Nova Scotia for over 40 years and was a Life Member of the Upper Musquodoboit Women's Institute; served as Provincial President and Vice-President of the Federated Women's Institutes of Canada for several years; served on National Board for over 30 years as both an officer and counsellor; held the position of Executive Director of W.I.N.S. for 22 years, retiring in 1988. She was instrumental in setting up the W.I.N.S. Buckle Baby program and the organizing of the first N.S. Farm Women's Conference; was Provincial Life member of W.I.N.S. She attended many conferences at the provincial, national and international level. While living in Upper Musquodoboit, she became a member of the Hospital Auxiliary, Red Cross, and Home and School. She served on the Minister's Committee on Highway Safety and was a member of the Legislative Steering Committee of Nova Scotia Lands and Forests, and the Nova Scotia Farm and Home Safety Committee. In Truro she had been a member of the Scotia Chapter, IODE, serving as Education Officer, Vice Regent and Regent; was a member of the Colchester Chapter IODE and held the office of Treasurer for several years; served as Treasurer of the Provincial Chapter of Nova Scotia IODE for 8 years and received a Provincial Life Membership in IODE. Norma was Treasurer of the Truro Music Festival for a number of years and Treasurer on the Board of Directors of the Watson Cemetery Limited; was a member and Treasurer of the Colchester Regional Hospital Auxiliary for several years. At one time, was President of the Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition and had also served as President of the N.S. Safety Council; served as Treasurer of the Colchester Historical Society for 4 years; honorary member of the former Canadian Home Economics Association and the Nova Scotia Institute of Agrologists. On her retirement she received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Nova Scotia Farm Home and Safety Committee in recognition of her contribution to farm health and safety in N.S. Norma also was presented with a citation from the N.S. Department of Labor in recognition for efforts in accident prevention. She is survived by her children, Brian Keith (Valerie), Stephen Edward, Joan Elizabeth (Neil) Sponagle, Marilyn Anne (Ian) Hayre; grandchildren, Shannon (Andrew Mader) Mosher, Brianna Mosher, Laura, Benjamin (Melissa), and Matthew Sponagle, Brittany and Jefferson Hayre; great grandchildren, Ethan and Taylor Mader. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband, Keith Miller Mosher. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Saturday, February 2nd beginning at 1 p.m. until the time of service at 2 p.m., all in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro with Rev. Valerie Kingsbury officiating. Interment in Watson Cemetery in the spring. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of choice. a special "thank you" to the nurses and staff of the 3rd floor at Colchester East Hants Health Centre.
