Alice Maud Osmond, 91, a resident of the Northside Community Guest Home and formerly of Florence, passed away peacefully at the home on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010.
Born in Port aux Basques, Nfld., she was the daughter of the late Capt. John Thomas and Margaret (Dicks) Lawrence.
Alice was a member of Trinity Anglican Church, Sydney Mines.
She was active for more than 30 years with the Florence fire hall ladies auxiliary.
She enjoyed shopping and loved bingo, she’d go wherever there was a game. Alice loved to crochet and knit, and many kids on her street had a pair of mittens in winter from “Nanny Osmond.”
Alice is survived by children, Fred (Wilma), Margaret (Tommy) Chisholm, Lod (Sandra), Marlene (Glenn) Carey, Donna (Donald) Colburn and Bill, all of Florence, and Carl (Andrea), Grande Prairie, Alta., Edna Hurley, Harold Osmond and Gordon ‘Go’ (Judy) Osmond. She is also survived by her brother, Louis (Claudia) Lawrence, Channel, N.L., and by 37 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Mom will be surely missed walking the halls of Theresa Terrace, and by all the loving and compassionate staff who cared for her during the past two years in North Sydney. Previously, she had been a resident of the Richmond Villa in St. Peter’s.
She was predeceased by her husband, Lod, in 2000, by stepchildren, Sam (Mabel) and Berenna March and by brothers, Gordon, Maxwell, Howard, Ronald and Raymond. Also, by grandsons, Paul Gillam, Wayne Chisholm, Waide Hurley, Gordon Osmond, Billy and Bobby Waugh.
There will be no visitation. A funeral service celebrating Alice’s life will be held in Trinity Anglican Church, Queen Street, Sydney Mines, Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Peter Rafuse officiating. The burial will be in Trinity Cemetery, Tobin Road. A reception will be held in Grandy Hall following the committal.
Donations in Alice’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia or to the Northside Community Guest Home.
Arrangements have been entrusted to J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines.
