Pictou Landing - Gladys Christian MacKay, 97, of the Valley View Villa, Riverton and formerly of Pictou Landing, died on Friday, February 1, 2013 at the Villa. Born in Pictou Landing, she was the daughter of the late John James “Connie” and Anna (Campbell) Ferguson. Gladys was a life-long resident of Pictou Landing. She was a member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church in Pictou Landing where she served for a number of years as an organist and choir member. She was also a member of the W.M.S. and Bethel Guild. Gladys was an avid quilter and was one of the organizers of the first quilt display at Bethel Church. Her other hobbies included knitting, sewing, family genealogy, cooking and reading. She willingly volunteered for many community organizations including the Canadian Cancer Society, Heart and Stroke Fund and the Red Cross Blood Donor Clinic. For her volunteer work she received an award from the Municipality of Pictou. She served as Worthy Matron of the Lady Doric Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and received her fifty year jewel in 2008. Gladys was known for her hospitality and she welcomed friends and relatives young and old to her home. She is survived by her sons: Ferguson “Fergie” (Miriam); Lloyd (Linda); Cameron “Cammie” (Renate); grandchildren: Ian, Heather, Lloyd Douglas and Tanja; great-grandchildren: Jessie, Keegan, Charlie, Aiden, Keria, Malena and Adriana. She is also survived by stepsister, Jessie Polley; stepbrother, Wally Dickson; niece, Ann (Cyril) Rich; nephew, Robert (Marion) Nicholson and niece, Mildred McClelland. Gladys was predeceased by her husband Preston, stepfather Reuben Dickson, granddaughter Joanne (MacKay) McIntyre and foster brother Laurie Ferguson. The family will receive visitors from 2-4 and 7-9 pm Tuesday in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, High St., Trenton. A funeral service celebrating Gladys’ long and productive life will be held in the Bethel Presbyterian Church at 11 am Wednesday, conducted by Rev. Pat Rose. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery. Donations in Gladys’ memory may be made to Bethel Presbyterian Church or a charity of choice. A special thank you to Dr. Spencer Barclay, VON and the staff at the Valley View Villa for their care and compassion. An Eastern Star service will be held at 6:30 pm Tuesday in the Funeral Home.
