Norman Fiander Sr.
Born In: English Harbour West
Passed on: February 2nd, 2013
It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, Norman Fiander, on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, at home surrounded by his loving family.
Born in English Harbour West, N.L., he was the son of the late John Henry and Eva (Drake) Fiander.
Norman spent most of his working career in the fish processing industry, working with H.B. Nickerson, as well as National Sea Products in North Sydney, for over 50 years; retiring as shore skipper.
Norman loved wood working and spent many years building boats, both large and small; as well as furniture for his grandchildren and their dolls. He enjoyed music and is fondly remembered for playing his accordion and providing music for dances at the former Orange Lodge.
Norman was a familiar face at the horse barns and race track in North Sydney, and he took great pride in the fact that he was called upon to fix anything and everything for friends at the track.
He was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney, and a former member of Fulton Orange Lodge.
Norman is survived by his wife of 57 years, Shirley (Hurd) Fiander; his daughter, Eva (Lloyd) Fougere, Ball’s Creek; his sons, Norman Jr. (Debbie), North Sydney, Sheldon (Michele), Bras d’Or; his six grandchildren, Jason, Jenelle, Chad, Ashley, Laura, Stephanie; his three great-grandchildren, Jayden, Jordan, Colton; his sisters, Sadie Fiander, Amy (John) Bullen, both of English Harbour West., N.L., Maudie (Dean) Forrest, St. Margaret’s Bay, N.S., Lucy (Cecil) Matthews, Grand Bank, N.L.; his brother John (Beatrice) Fiander, Conception Bay South, N.L.
He was predeceased by his brother, Albert.
Visitation for Norman will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney, with Rev. Carl Fraser officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
