Age 58 of Baddeck, N.S., and formerly of Charlottetown, P.E.I., passed away suddenly yet peacefully, surrounded by his family, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney, N.S., on Jan. 21, 2010.
David was a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police retiring in 2006 after completing 33 years of dedicated and loyal service. David served in P.E.I, New Brunswick, and spent his final 20 years in Baddeck, N.S.
David's passions included sailing, curling, and plans for exploring many parts of this great earth by land and sea. He was a true believer of young people learning the art of sailing. During his last three years of retirement he was content to stay close to home and enjoy his gardens and nature’s beauty. He was a former volunteer of the Fire Department and Commodore and Past Commodore of the Bras d'Or Yacht Club in Baddeck.
David is survived by his wife, Shelley (nee MacKay), formerly of Orangedale, Cape Breton; sons, Aaron (Erin) of South Haven, Cape Breton; and Hillard (Amanda) of Grande Cache, Alta.; stepdaughter, Jacklyn, of Winnipeg, Man.; father, James Hillard Eric MacDonald of Marshfield, P.E.I.; sister, Mary (Bobby) MacDonald of Ten Mile House, P.E.I.; brothers, Kevin (Cindi) of Charlottetown, P.E.I.; Allan (Geri) of Montague, P.E.I.; and Michael of Campbellford, Ont. David will be remembered by many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, dear friends and his only grandson, Heath Xavier. David was predeceased by his mother, Florence Marie (nee Peters), and brother, Hillard.
David's remains have been cremated. A funeral service in his honour will be held on Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010, at Greenwood United Church in Baddeck at 3 p.m. Officiated by Rev. Karen Lynch and eulogy by Rev. Aaron Billard. David's remains will be laid to rest at a later date in a private family service. Family flowers only.
Donations may be made in David's memory to the Bras d'Or Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program in Baddeck or to the Haiti Relief Fund.
