It is with great sadness that we the family announce the passing of Donald Weldon Matheson, 86, formerly of St. Joseph Street, New Waterford, on Jan. 22, 2010 at Celtic Court, Sydney.
Born in Birch Grove, he was a son of the late Neil Hugh and Sarah Marcella (Johnson) Matheson. Donald was an active member of Calvin United Church where he was an Elder and choir member for several years. He was employed as a time keeper with Devco for many years until his retirement.
Donnie enjoyed singing and passed that gift on to others in his travels with the Men of the Deeps. He also loved to talk of fond memories of his 'home away from home', Sangaree. There he would spend his days sailing, birdwatching and swimming and in the evenings around the camp fire singing his favourite tunes with family and friends.
Donnie was a former member of the Maple Leaf Masonic Lodge #88 in New Waterford and recently a member of the Tyrian Youth Lodge # 45 in Glace Bay.
He also enjoyed sports and was a die-hard Toronto Maple Leafs fan.
Surviving are sons, Ian (Kathleen) Matheson, and children Molly Rae and Benjamin David, Canmore, Alta., David (Ida) Matheson, and sons Tyler Vaughn and Kent, New Waterford, Allan (Daisy) Matheson, and daughter Devyn Emma, Canmore, Alta.; sisters Morah Woodrow, Halifax, Marcella (Frank) Rogers, Yarmouth; several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Donnie was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Avice Marie (Lewis) Matheson; brothers, Earl, Edgar, Allan, Adrien, James, William, and John, sister, Jessie.
Cremation has taken place. There will be a gathering of family and friends Monday, Jan. 25 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford.
