We, the children of Joseph Ruelland are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of our beloved father. Dad, passed away Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010, at the Maple Hill Manor in the loving arms of his daughter, Debbie.
Born and raised in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Francis and Alvina (Sampson) Ruelland. Joseph was a former resident of Flat Point Road.
A man of great pride, dad provided endless love for his family. Dad was a coal miner and after a hard day’s work, he could be found doing what he loved best — carpentry. Many claim he was the master at installing hardwood floors, a skill he passed along to his son, Danny and son-in-law, Wilson Tighe as well as his foster son, Walter MacDonald. Dad enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, one of which was horse racing. He could be found at the races, either in Sydney or Inverness with his son, Danny, son-in-law, Wilson or his late brother, George.
Joseph is survived by daughters, Debbie (Wilson) Tighe, Darlene Leudy (Harry); only son, Daniel (Jean) and foster son, Walter MacDonald. Also surviving are special granddaughters, Denise, Danielle, Tara, Jenna and Danna; grandsons, Taylor, Preston and great-grandchildren, Bria, Nicholas, Allie. Joseph is survived by sisters, Louise Beaton, Evangeline McMaster; a brother, Louie (Barbara) and a sister-in-law, Gloria (Ray) MacLean.
He was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife, Dorothy in 1994, grandson, Nicholas Daniel Ruelland, brothers, George, Francis, Danny, Maurice, sisters, Mary and Annie in infancy.
Visitation will be held today (Tuesday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. The funeral mass, officiated by Rev. Paul MacNeil will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mt. Carmel Avenue. Interment will follow in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. Fellowship to take place at the KOC Hall, Plummer Avenue.
As an expression of sympathy for Joseph, donations in his memory may be made to the Maple Hill Manor, or the Children’s Wish Foundation, Nova Scotia Chapter.

A heart of gold stopped beating today
Hard-working hands are now at rest
It broke our hearts to lose you
For God only takes the best.
Wonderful memories will be woven in gold
Fond memories will linger.
We will forever love you and miss you dad.
