Sr. Grace Virginia Gillis, 98, died at Parkstone Enhanced Care on Feb. 13, 2013.
Born in New Waterford on June 8, 1914, she was a daughter of the late John A. and Mary (MacFarlane) Gillis.
She entered the Sisters of Charity, Halifax on Sept. 8, 1933, and made her final profession on Aug. 15, 1942. Prior to her teaching career Sr. Grace received a BA and a certificate in administration. She spent the majority of her life as an educator and from 1935 until 1981 she served in New Waterford, Halifax, New Aberdeen, N.S., and then was transferred to the west serving in Cranbrook, B.C. She not only served as a teacher but spent 15 years as a principal. After 1981, she was engaged in pastoral ministry and as a volunteer visitor to the elderly and the sick.
In September 1994, she was transferred to Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse in Halifax, where she began her retirement years. In 2005 she was admitted to Parkstone Enhanced Care, where she remained until her death.
She is survived by her sisters, Mrs. Peggy Howell and Mrs. Rose LeBlanc of Sydney; her sisters-in-law, Mrs. Eileen Gillis, Antigonish, and Mrs. Martha Gillis, New Waterford. Sister is also survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Mrs. Tina Campbell, Mrs. Rita Heffernan and Sr. Mary Lydia Gillis, SC, her brothers, Joseph, John, Hugh, Myles and Alexander and also John Harold and Mary Margaret in infancy.
The body will be in Caritas Residence with visitation from 3-7 p.m., today (Thursday), Feb. 14, 2013. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, Feb. 15 at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Chapel of Caritas Residence. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, N.S.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Charity Ministry Fund.
