It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Llewellyn ‘Lew’ Evans, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in North Sydney, Lew was the son of the late John A. and Martha (Mullins) Evans.
He was a veteran of the Second World War serving with the Merchant Marines. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 19, North Sydney.
Lew was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney.
He was employed as a stevedore with CN Marine and later Marine Atlantic until his retirement in 1987, and was a member of the International Longshoreman’s Association.
A community minded person, Lew was president of the North Sydney Wildlife Association for 35 years, and a longtime member of the Margaree Fishing Association and a member of the Margaree Senior Citizens Club. He was well known for teaching classes in fly-tying and was also a hunter safety instructor. In his early years he was involved with Scout Canada as a scout leader. Lew also enjoyed training horses and was an avid sportsman, hunter and angler. His greatest enjoyment was the time he spent salmon fishing on the Margaree River, where he spent 20 years after his retirement.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Lena (MacAulay) Evans; his children, Brent (June) Evans, Mill Creek, Phillip Evans, Halifax, Patricia ‘Patsy’ Evans, Georges River, Beth Evans (Denise), Yarmouth, Vivian (Colin) Ross, Margaree, Harvey (Kathy) Evans, North Sydney; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Berkley (Mildred) Evans, North Sydney; one sister, Mildred Charron, Ontario.
He was predeceased by his son, David and brothers, Leo, Albert and George and sisters, Freda, Vivian and Olive.
Visitation for Lew will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Friday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Saturday at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Rev. Gloria McClure-Fraser officiating. Burial to take place in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
