Born at Head of Tide, NB, June 29, 1932, he was a son of the late Earl and Stella (Porter) Archibald. Jack is survived by his wife of 57 years, Olive Ann (Butler) Archibald; four children, John (Kathy), of Tide Head, NB, Carol-Ann (Glen Lyons) of Fredericton, NB, Margaret (Eric Bishop) and Marjorie (Mark Jewell), both of Edmonton, AB; five grandchildren, Scott McRae (Nalin) of Fredericton, NB, Heather Dawn Archibald (Trevor), Nicolas Jewell (Kaitlyn) of Edmonton, AB, Jennifer Archibald of Tide Head, NB, Caitlin Jewell of Edmonton, AB and Step-Grandson Gefen Bishop of Edmonton, AB; three brothers Donald (Barb) of Miramichi, NB, Leland (Audrey) of Oromocto, NB, and Gary (Cathy) of Dalhousie, NB; cousins Ronald (Ruth) Kierstead of Miramichi, NB and Gail (Ian) Neilson of Gagetown, NB. In addition to his parents, Jack was also predeceased by his brother, Gordon (1962), daughter, Mary Catherine (1969) and his father-in-law, Edward (Chummie) Butler (1973). Jackie was a lifelong resident of Tide Head, NB. He worked for 20 years as a Journeyman Electrician for Fraser’s Paper Inc., in Athoville, NB. Marrying his childhood sweetheart, Olive Ann, in 1955, Jackie cherished every moment he could share with his children, grandchildren, siblings and extended family, spending time fishing, hunting, trapping, tapping trees, studying the stars and enjoying the wondrous nature all around him. In 1968, he entered the teaching profession as a generalist at Campbellton Composite High School. In 1973, he became Vocational Department Head at Restigouche Senior High School, later becoming Vice Principal and Acting Principal of Sugarloaf Senior High School. He was an active member of the New Brunswick Teacher’s Association, both locally and provincially, and was a Reading Mentor after retirement at the Juniper Elementary School. Jackie loved sports, playing hockey and baseball as a youngster, later coaching the Tide Head Falcons Hockey and Baseball teams. There are many fond memories of him flooding the ice at the old rink, sometimes doing so at 3am before heading to his shift at the mill. When Jackie wasn’t coaching he could be found refereeing a hockey game or announcing a baseball game. A strong supporter of extra-curricular activities such as sports, music, etc., he believed that such involvement led to well rounded students and responsible community members. He was instrumental in building the Tide Head Recreation Centre, wanting nothing but the best for the kids from the Village of Tide Head. In later years he served as a Tide Head Municipal Councillor, and was appointed to the New Brunswick Protestant Orphanage Foundation as a representative, sitting on the Board for a number of years. He was an active member of the Restigouche and NB Provincial Liberal Associations, as well as, the NB Trappers Association and the local Audubon Society. For many years, Jackie supported and sat on the Executive of the Restigouche Music Festival Committee as Treasurer. Beginning in 1992, Jackie and Olive Ann served the following Pastoral Charges within the United Church of Canada: Glassville-Juniper, Douglastown, Escuminac (PQ), New Mills, Blackville and Metis-Leggatts Pointe (PQ). Making lasting friendships wherever he went, Jackie embraced his love of nature through gardening, woodworking and doing his part to protect the environment. He loved his walks to the river, trips to the family camp, the campfires at Odell Park, introducing his grandkids to his love of nature, long conversations with his children and grandchildren, mentoring teachers and keeping in touch with old friends. He will be greatly missed by Olive and the kids, his brothers and their families and many close friends and acquaintances.
