O’NEILL, Margaret E. – Passed away peacefully on Wednesday January 27-2010 at the Hoyles-Escasoni Complex, St John's, Margaret E. O'Neill of Trepassey, aged 98 years. Predeceased by her beloved husband Vincent J. O’Neill, her parents Nicholas Martin and Mary Curtis Martin Peddle and a sister, Florence Martin. Leaving to mourn two daughters: Julie Ward (Michael) and Florrie Dammers (Richard); four grandchildren: Rick Dammers (Becky), Maureen Shealy (Jim), Karen Howle (Scott); eight great-grandsons of whom she was so proud, also survive her. They are Benjamin, Jonathan and Samuel Howle, Nicholas, Russell and Patrick Shealy and Logan and Sean Ward; their son Matthew Ward; two special twin girls, the daughters of Rick and Becky Dammers, are expected to be born in May. Margaret was born in Long Beach on July 12, 1911. After the untimely death of her father, she moved with her mother and sister to Trepassey, where she grew up and attended school. After working in St John's, she married Vincent O’Neill on June 4, 1942 and lived for several years in Port Kirwan, where her daughters were born. In 1947 the family moved to the United States, but upon retirement, Margaret and Vince returned to Newfoundland. Margaret loved to travel and play cards and bingo. She was an avid knitter, and always had a project underway. Her garden and her house plants gave her many hours of enjoyment, and she had an abiding love of birds and animals, especially cats. No stray ever went away unfed.
