Alexander Vickers
Born In: Sydney Mines
Born: April 14th, 1936
Passed on: March 4th, 2013
We regret to announce the sudden passing of Alex Vickers, 76, on Monday, March 4, 2013, after a very brief battle with cancer.
Born in Sydney Mines on April 14, 1936, he was the son of the late Joe and Ann (MacIntyre) Vickers. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Sydney Mines.
Alex spent his working life behind the wheel, first for Thompson and Sutherland, and later as owner/operator of his own business. Many will remember him as having the waste removal contract for the former Town of Sydney Mines for over two decades prior to his retirement.
Although it’s been many years since he was a horse owner, Alex was a lifelong harness racing fan, and could be found at Northside Downs most mornings, watching the horses and visiting “the boys.” He never missed a race day.
Alex is survived by his daughter, Lana LeBlanc; brothers, Bob and Blaise (Bernice) Vickers; sister, Ann Marie Vickers; nieces, Joanne Bruno and Shauna (Jim) Guy and great-nieces, Jenna and Victoria Guy.
Besides his parents, Alex was predeceased by his eldest brother, Joe and his beloved, Patricia, who lost her own battle with cancer just seven months ago.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. A memorial mass will be held Friday, March 8, 2013, at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Convent Street, Sydney Mines, with Fr. Thomas John officiating. A reception will take place in the Centennial Room, following the mass.
Donations in Alex’s honour may be made to a charity of choice.
Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com.
“God saw him getting tired,
A cure not meant to be,
So He wrapped His arms around him,
And whispered, ‘Come with Me’.”
