Donald Downey
DOWNEY, DONALD LINCOLN - 1925 - 2013 - Donald Lincoln Downey passed away peacefully at Hospice Wellington in Guelph, Ontario on March 7, 2013. He was born September 12, 1925 in Curryville, Albert County, New Brunswick to the late Aggie (Steeves) and Sterling Downey, the second of seven children. He will be deeply missed by his wife Jean (Cochrane) and his four children Ferne (Paul), Kevin (Maia), Ross and Carol, and by his grandchildren Katherine and Ava, as well as his step-children Karen (Paul) Michaud and Alan (Jackie) Cochrane. Predeceased by his first wife Betty (Henderson) and by his siblings Mavis (Mitton), Cerdic and Ralph. Survived by his sisters Dorothy (Meldrum), Rowena (Brown) and Marilyn (McKenzie). A graduate of Mount Allison Academy, Don was employed for 38 years with CN Rail as an administrative officer in Freight Sales and Marketing in New Brunswick and PEI. He enjoyed golfing, skating, skiing, curling and played a mean game of horseshoes. Loving and adventurous, he never met a back road or backwoods path he was unwilling to explore. Upon retirement in 1986, his travels took him across North America, to Europe and as far away as a square dance festival in Sapporo, Japan. Don always kept up with the Canadian political scene. He was a member and choir member of First United Church in Cambridge, Ontario. He was a kind, gregarious, stubborn man whose great gifts were his love of family and friendly ease with people both familiar and newly met.
A funeral service will be held Sunday, March 10, 2013 at 2 p.m. at First United Church, 15 Wellington Street in Cambridge. Cremated remains will be interred in Wilmot Cemetery, Lower Coverdale, N.B. at a later date. Anyone wishing to make a charitable donation in Don Downey’s memory may do so by donating to the Cancer Research Society, Hospice Wellington, or the First United Church in Cambridge, Ontario.
