NEW GLASGOW – Frank “Danky” Dorrington, 80, of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, passed away surrounded by family on March 11, 2013.
Danky was born in New Glasgow on January 21, 1933. He was a son of the late William and Donelda (MacKay) Dorrington.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Angie (Pitts); son, Franklin, New Glasgow; daughter, Tracy (Scott) Taylor, New Glasgow; granddaughters, Michaela and Rebecca Taylor, New Glasgow; brothers: John, New Glasgow; George (Mary), New Glasgow; sister, Gertrude Ann Dorrington Wright, Stellarton; sister-in-law, Anne (Cornett) Dorrington, New Glasgow; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Danky was predeceased by his brothers, Colin (died in infancy), Hugh “Sam”; sister-in-law, June (Christie) Dorrington; brother-in-law, James “Rock” Wright; nieces, Kathleen Margaret and Georgina Denise Wright.
Danky was an avid sportsman, athlete and gentleman. He was known in most hockey circles of the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s, winning many championships in the Maritime Provinces, the East Coast of the United States and, in his adopted province of Newfoundland. In 1972 the city of Corner Brook held a day in his honour the “Frank Danky Dorrington Day”, recognizing him for his sports achievements in both hockey and softball. Danky was a member of the Newfoundland Sports Hall of Fame (1988), member of the Newfoundland Amateur Hockey Association Hall of Fame (1996), a two time member of the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame (2007 and 2008), and a proud member of the Pictou County Sports Heritage Hall of Fame (2005).
A celebration of Danky’s life will be held at Summer Street Industries in New Glasgow, Sunday, March 17, from 12 p.m.-3 p.m.
