Ada McCarthy

Born In: Port aux Basques
Born: November 16th, 1928

Passed on: March 14th, 2013

It is with great sadness the family of Ada McCarthy, age 84, announces her peaceful passing on Thursday, March 14, 2013, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born on November 16, 1928 in Port aux Basques, NL she was the daughter of the late Harold and Dora (Evans) Jeans. Besides her parents, Ada was predeceased by her loving husband Timothy Joseph McCarthy in 1985; her brothers Vernon ‘Tommy’, Victor (Vera) and Bob; and her sister Vera.
She is survived by her son Donald (Brenda) McCarthy, Georges River and her daughter Josilyn (Gordon) Hare, Coldbrook, NS; her loving grandchildren Kristina and Timothy McCarthy, Georges River, Dawn (Peter) Marsters, Kentville and Aimee (Harrison) Wright, Woodville, NS; her three great-grandchildren Lilly and Ben Marsters and Ever Wright.
She is also survived by her sisters Ruth (Jack) Marks, Cornerbrook, NL and Lillian (Ron) Marshall, St. John’s, NL; her sisters-in-law Joan Joyce, Port aux Basques and Norma Philp, Newfoundland.
Ada grew up in a giving and loving family, and then met the love of her life, Tim who she adored and had 36 wonderful years together. They loved to dance, fish, hunt, picnic, play cards and spend time with friends. As a mother, she was the best – always there for her family. In true Newfoundland style, her home was spotless. It was said you could “eat off the kitchen floor”. She always welcomed company into their home and could stretch a meal to feed anyone who came through the door. Losing Tim brought great sadness into her life, but her grandchildren and great-grandchildren helped to bring the spark back into her eyes. She learned to drive after Tim’s passing, and took great pride in her independence, especially in being able to make surprise visits to her family. She loved to play bingo and will be sadly missed by all her friends. She was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney.
The family would like to give a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Joan Salah for her devoted and respectful care of Ada, also a sincere thank you to the nursing staff at 5 East of the Northside General Hospital and all the volunteers with Palliative Care and the Legion.
Visitation for Ada will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Sunday at W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. J.J. MacDonald officiating. Burial to take place in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Northside Hospital Foundation.
