It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear mother and grandmother, Vera Chislett, at home in Dartmouth, on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010.
Vera was born in Rose Blanche, Nfld., on July 4, 1914, She was a daughter of the late Arthur and Louisa (Bird) Moore. Vera was fond of saying that she immigrated to Nova Scotia, Canada from Newfoundland before Confederation.
She lived in Glace Bay with her husband and children until 1956. She then moved to North Sydney where she lived until 1995, when she moved to Dartmouth to live with her daughter, Ann.
Vera’s many grandchildren were her greatest joy, and she was happiest at gatherings with family and friends. In her long life, Vera experienced many historical events. Her memory was remarkable and she was well known for the stories she loved to tell. She was an avid reader, traveled extensively, loved her “scratch ticketsâ€, and never lost interest in trying new things like playing games on the computer. Vera was the family matriarch and will be sadly missed by her entire family, her friends and her beloved cats.

She is survived by her children, Viola Gray, North Sydney, Denis (Linda) Chislett, Barrie, Ont. and Ann Chislett, Dartmouth. She is also survived by her six grandchildren, Kimberly (Gerard) MacDonald, Sydney Mines, Robert (Cathy) Gray, Dartmouth, Darryl (Margaret) Gray, North Sydney, Cheryl (Dean) Reavie, Barrie, Wayne (Chantelle) Chislett, Minnesota and Karen (Ted) Chadderton, Barrie; by her 16 great-grandchildren, Sherry (Keith) Campbell, Bras d‘Or, Richard (Kerry) MacDonald, Fort McMurray, Alta., Jeffrey (Sarah) MacDonald, Fort McMurray, Daniel Gray, Dartmouth, Morgan Gray, Dartmouth, Chad (Krysta) MacDonald, North Sydney, Christian Gray, Dartmouth, James Gray, North Sydney, Samantha Reavie, Barrie, Jennifer Reavie, Barrie, Robert Gray, North Sydney, Matthew Reavie, Barrie, Meghan Chadderton, Barrie, Lucy Chadderton, Barrie, Dorothy Chislett, Minnesota; by her five great-great-grandchildren, Logan and Dillon Campbell, Bras d’Or, Alicia MacDonald, Fort McMurray, Bryson and Sophia MacDonald, Fort McMurray and by many nieces and nephews.
Vera was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Chislett, and son-in-law, Robert Gray. She was the last remaining member of her immediate family, predeceased by her parents, Louisa (Bird) and Arthur Moore; nine brothers, Albert, Wilfred, William, Raymond, Ralph, Norman, Wentfred, Reginald and Lewis Moore and one sister, Evelyn (Moore) Hatcher
Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Sunday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Monday, at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney with Rev. Gloria McClure-Fraser officiating. Burial will take place at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. A reception will take place at the church hall following the funeral.
