DYRLAND - Selma Andrea Dyrland May 3rd 1912 to March 5th 2013.
Selma passed away peacefully in the Cypress Regional Hospital, Swift Current, with family and Pastor Linda Hall at her side. Selma Andrea Hystad the oldest daughter of Halvor Hystad from Stord, Norway and Alida Eide Moberg from Halsnoy Kloster, Norway, Halvor was a school teacher and attended seminary. Selma was the first baby born in the Hazlet, Sask. area, where her parents homesteaded. Selma and Martha attended the Standing Rock School until 1924, then moved to and attended school at Neosho in the Kyle district. Here she met and later married Ellert Dyrland of the Neosho district on April the 5th, 1929. The next phase of her life she spent working closely with Ellert, as manager of the White Bear Co-op and as a farm spouse and partner, raising a family of five. Many moves were involved over the years, Calgary, Entwistle, Swift Current, White Bear, then to the farm. After Ellert passed away Selma worked with Ron and Stu and families to help build the family farm, Norseman Farms, her interest in the farm was there right up until she passed away. In later years Selma moved into Kyle, enjoying the visits of her grandchildren as they attended school there. She later moved to the Pioneer Estates Condo development Swift Current, here she met and enjoyed the company of other wonderful new friends. Selma was active in the Lutheran church and the ELCW;for a period of time she was the President of the Swift Current conference ELCW. She was part of a committee to put together the local Kyle and White Bear community history book; she enjoyed tracing the family history. Selma's family was very important to her she loved all 120 of them. One of her many projects were to hand write a recipe book for all her children and grandchildren. Many of the pleasures in Mom's life included hosting Christmas Eve, reading the Christmas story, having relatives and neighbours stop by for coffee or supper, loved music and dance, this put a smile on her face. Selma enjoyed the company of her neighbours visiting and having coffee whenever possible. As well she enjoyed her garden and the trees on the farm where she spent many hours working. Later on she enjoyed the Co-op cafeteria and the Co-op in general, meeting and visiting with the staff and patrons, friends and neighbours. She didn't profess to have any secret to her long life; she enjoyed what she did, worked hard, loved her family and had a strong faith in God. Family was a very important part of her life; she knew and kept track of all the members of her family, attending as many family celebrations as possible. Selma enjoyed travelling; she travelled several times with her sister Martha, to Alaska and Norway, and as well enjoyed being along with Ron and Bev and the boys, and Stuart and Leslie and their family every chance she had. She enjoyed other trips as well with Dolly, Fran, and Myrna when the opportunity arose. One of the interesting tidbits of Selma is that she still had her driver's license set to expire May 3rd, 2013.
