Beatrice Mahoney
MAHONEY, BEATRICE JULIA - The death of Beatrice Julia Mahoney of Fredericton, NB took place on March 20, 2013 at the Falls Villa in Grand Falls at the age of 97 years. Born in Johnville, NB, on August 1, 1915 she was the daughter of Michael Mahoney and Catherine (Cronin) Mahoney. She was the last surviving member of her family. Beatrice began her teaching career in 1932 in rural schools in California Settlement, Grand Falls, New Denmark, and Blackville. Beatrice then participated in a Youth Training Program, training young people the art of weaving and sewing, and they, in turn, were sent to rural communities in New Brunswick to teach local people. In 1940, Beatrice graduated from St. Francis Xavier University and taught Home Economics in St. Stephen, NB. In 1942, Beatrice went on staff at the New Brunswick Teachers’ College. In 1949, she received her Bachelor of Science in Home Economics from Syracuse University and in 1956, her Masters in Home Economics from Columbia University in New York. She continued to teach at the NB Teachers’ College and University of New Brunswick until her retirement in 1975. Beatrice was a member of the CWL, NB Teachers’ Association, Retired Teachers’ honorary society, OMICRON NU (The decision to award this invitation was made by the administration of the Teachers’ College of Columbia University). Beatrice was predeceased by her parents, her sisters, Eileen (Ambrose) Toner, Dorothy (Edward) MacNamara, and her brothers, James, John (Rita) Mahoney, and Daniel (Helen) Mahoney. She is survived by nieces and nephews: Allison Toner, Monica Toner Washburn, Fr. Michael Toner CSC, Katherine Toner Bourque, Joan Toner Cowan, Sheila Toner McCarthy and Beatrice Toner Long, Maureen MacNamara Levy, Sharon MacNamara Moody, Sheila MacNamara Dolan, Joseph MacNamara and Karen MacNamara Riley, Colleen Mahoney Peake, Brian Mahoney, Sharon Mahoney Lampart, John Mahoney, Rosemary Mahoney Brennan, Mary Lou Mahoney, Catherine Mahoney, Evelyn Mahoney Pierce and Michael Mahoney. She is also survived by 46 grandnieces and nephews and many great-grandnieces and nephews. The family would like to acknowledge the outstanding care and support she received from the staff and Dr. Shawn Blunston while a resident at Falls Villa for the past 6 years.
Visitation will be held at Bishop’s Funeral Home, 540 Woodstock Road, on Friday March 22, 2013 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm and 7:00 to 9:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Dunstan’s Church on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at 11:00 am, with her nephew, Michael Toner, CSC, officiating and Father Bill Brennan, pastor at St. Dunstan’s, concelebrating. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to a charity of the Donor’s choice. Interment will be in Johnville in the spring.
