It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Mary Georgina Demont which occurred at home on Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010.
Rea was born July 10,1921, a daughter of the late Roderick and Mary (Beaton) Anderson. She was a resident of 228 Brookside St., Glace Bay for over 50 years and the same house in which she was born.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Earl; sons, Dr. Bruce (Michelle), Illinois, Kenneth (Ann), Glace Bay; granddaughters, Brittany, Caitlin, Renee and Chelsea, Illinois whom she adored. She is also survived by her sister, Thelma MacDonald, Seaview Manor; a brother, Lorne, Coxheath and a sister-in-law, Marge Anderson, Berwick. She has many nieces, nephews and cousins all across Canada and the USA and a very special nephew, Peter (Maureen) Anderson, New Brunswick.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Amour Anderson, Frances Broderick and a brother, Roderick Anderson.
A graduate of Glace Bay High School and the Nova Scotia Normal College in Truro, Rea began her teaching career at Hillside, Mira where she made many lifelong friends and ended it 35 years later at Caledonia School, Glace Bay. She was a founding member of the Caledonia Home and School Association and continued as treasurer even into her retirement.
Rea enjoyed baking and all sports, especially basketball and swimming. She was an ardent bridge player with her close friends, Jean, Pauline and Rachael. She was a member of Knox United Church where she supported its many events, especially when called upon for sandwiches or sweets.
Rea enjoyed her summer home at Broad Cove Banks, Inverness where, with her mother, picking berries and making preserves was a yearly enjoyable task.
We would like to thank our family doctor, Dr. Jim MacKillop and Dr. Bruce McClelland for their ongoing medical support over the past number of years. Also the VON and the home care workers.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at the Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay on Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2010 from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A celebration of her life will take place on Friday, Feb. 12, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Knox United Church, Glace Bay with Rev. John Findlayson officiating. Reception to follow in the Memorial Room. Interment will take place at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at a later date in the summer.
Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to Knox United Church or a charity of one’s choice.
