Passed on: February 8th, 2010

The family of Delories Mahoney are saddened to announce her passing Feb. 8, 2010, in her 88th year.
Delories was born and raised in Sydney, a daughter of the late Earle and Marguerite (Steele) Woodill and married her beloved husband, the late John Richard Mahoney in 1943.
Over her lifetime, she was employed by the T. Eaton Co., Maritime Telegraph & Telephone Co., Our Lady of Fatima glebe house and of course, worked lovingly and hard with our dad in all aspects of life bringing up a family of eight children. They were one of the founding families of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Sydney River.
Delories was also a great volunteer and participant in many organizations such as “Meals on Wheels”, the Canadian Diabetic Society, Our Lady of Fatima CWL, Spanish River Seniors, a founding member of Valley Mills Fire Department ladies auxiliary and the Riverside Seniors Group.
Delories was an avid and skillful swimmer who taught all her children to swim at Sydney River behind our home. She loved fishing all year long, especially at Mahoney’s Point, Valley Mills. She loved playing cards, knitting and driving, especially in her first car, a baby blue Grand Prix in her later years. She loved boating and would find any excuse to go out on the water as an avid outdoor enthusiast.
Delories is survived by her eight children who love her dearly, Richard, D-Anna, Robert (Lana), Charles (Kathleen) and Lena Mahoney-Petrie (Jim), all of Sydney, and Wendell (JoAnn), Edmonton, Michael (Geri), Valley Mills, River Denny’s, and Carole Buchanan, (John), Collingwood Corner. Delories was “Granny” to 12 grandchildren, Kim, Shaun, Karen, Jason, Jennifer, Annette, Todd, Amanda, Jonathan, Katy, John and Lauren. She was delighted by the birth of eight great-grandchildren, Olivia, Ryan, Sasha, Austin, Mabel, Braeden, Elsie and Archie. She is also survived by her brothers, Fred Woodill (Mary), Ben (Bingy), Ron (Joan) and sisters-in-law, Sr. Lena Mahoney and Edna Mahoney-Irving; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends.
Besides her husband, John and her parents, Delories was predeceased by her sister, Shannon MacDougall.
Delories loved her family and friends and lived life to the fullest especially in Valley Mills, River Denny’s, where her bungalow is located.
We, her family, have been very blessed to have had Delories and John as parents and role models. Mom, rest in the arms of God; we miss you and will always see you in your children and grandchildren’s faces.
We are thankful to the loving care our mother received from doctors and the nursing staff in the palliative care unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Visitation for Delories Mahoney will take place at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel today (Tuesday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church with Rev. Donald MacGillivary officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Salvation Army, Diabetes Association or the Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund.
