It is with heavy hearts that we the family announce the passing of Joseph Ganaway on Wednesday April 3, 2013 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Raised in Malquish, he was the son of the late Alexander and Annie Agnes (MacKay) Ganaway.
He was raised by his loving aunt and uncle the late Dan Willie and Marion Burns. Joe was known for his sense of humor, love of fishing, picking berries, clam digging, watching Jeopardy, driving around the harbor and spending time with friends, family, and his faithful companion, his dog Happy.
Joe is survived by his wife of 47 years, Ruth (MacMillan) Ganaway; sons, Andy, Russell, Neil (Patricia), Allen, (April), Victor; and his daughter, Valerie (Sam); his wonderful grandchildren, Laura, Meaghan, Danielle, Ocean, Alyssa Paige, Coady, Katrina, Sammy, Zackary, Riley and a great granddaughter, Angelina; his sister, Daisy Hornung; sister-in-law, Sheila Burns as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his half siblings, Daniel Burns, Michael (Rose) Burns, Tina Ruggles, Mary Effie (Ernie) Martin; special uncle Dan Willie MacKay; his nephew, Dougie MacDonald; and special friend, Anne Gillis.
As per his wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Friday April 5, 2013 (today) at the SW Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and again on Saturday April 6, 2013 from 2-3 p.m. with a celebration of his life to follow at 3 p.m. at the Fourchu United Church with Rev. Nancy Whitney and Rev. Louis Ihasz co-officiating. Interment to follow in Zion United Church Cemetery, Gabarus Lake. Reception to follow in the Fourchu Community Hall.
