It is with our deepest regret that we announce the passing of Joseph Eldon Sponagle. Joseph passed away at his residence on Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010, following a lengthy illness.
Joseph is survived by his mother, Mrs. Mary Sponagle (Young) and was predeceased by his father, Ernest Sponagle and baby sister, Brenda.
Born in Glace Bay, Joseph lived in many parts of Canada where he pursued various employment opportunities. While Joseph enjoyed many social activities such as dancing and playing cards, his greatest passion was driving and working on trucks. At the time of his death, Joseph lived on Alexander Street, Sydney, where he enjoyed the company of many close friends.
Joseph will be sadly missed by his mother, Mary Sponagle; three sisters, Mrs. Joan Pelrine (Joe), Port Hawkesbury, Mrs. Jaevaius MacKenzie (Michael), Dartmouth, and Mrs. Susan McCormick (Blair), Glace Bay. Joseph is also survived by his three children, Rose, Carolyn and Joey and six grandchildren.
Visitation for Joseph will be held Friday, Feb. 12, 2010, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010, at St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
