We regret to announce the passing of Gladys at the Glace Bay Hospital on Feb. 10, 2010.
Born in Blaketown, N.L., she grew up in Birch Grove, the daughter of the late Edgar and Mary Emma Smith.
In 1946 she married Capt. John D. Munroe of the RCAF. They lived at various air force stations in Canada the USA and Europe, retiring in 1968 and returning to live in Cape Breton. There she enjoyed working at Rosenblum’s Ladies Wear. Her favourite pastimes were cooking and enjoying the sun.
She is survived by her son, Vaughn Munroe; daughter-in-law, Valerie (nee Mitenko); grandchildren, Mark and Joy, all residents of Ottawa; sisters, Sadie Harn (the late Herbie), Muriel Peach (the late Brenton), Reta Layes (Lloyd), Lena MacDonald (the late Ronald) and Shirley Appleton (the late Tom). Also surviving are sister-in-law, Janie Matheson, Little Narrows and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, John, sisters, Ella MacLeod (Aulay), Mary Ferguson (Donald), Myrtle MacInnis (Manning), Olive MacPherson (Clair) and brothers, Eugene and Kenneth.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Patten Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of one’s choice.
