PICTOU – Catherine Anne (MacDonald) MacMillan, 90, Shiretown Nursing Home, Pictou, formerly of Pictou Island and Pictou, passed away in the Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Unit, on Wednesday, February 10, 2010.
She was a daughter of the late Duncan and Charlotte “Lottie” (Bishop) MacDonald; and was predeceased by her husband, John Angus MacMillan; her brother, Melvin; half-brothers: Alec, Jack (Mae), Edward “Spike” (Thelma) and Kenny; sisters: Greta (Bastiaan) denHollander, Irene (Jack) Sinclair, Elsie; and half-sister, Jessie (Howard) MacCallum; also, brothers-in-law: Charlie, Arnold, and Lorne; and sisters-in-law: Hilda (Jim) Blackie, Rita (Wesley) Quinn, Verna (Duncan) Rankin, and Nina (Fraser) Matheson, as well as her niece, Beatrice; and nephew, Jackie.
She is survived by her sisters-in-law: Marge (Charlie) MacMillan, Lorraine (Arnold) MacMillan, and Ethel MacMillan, along with 22 nieces and nephews.
Although never blessed with children of her own, Catherine was beloved by many for her cookies, kindness, and generous spirit. She spent most of her life on Pictou Island where she worked on her father’s farm during the great depression, and then with her husband, John, who farmed and fished. Catherine cared for several siblings in their later years and was always quick to lend a hand. She enjoyed her summers on Pictou Island right up to the age of 87 and will be dearly missed by the community there.
Her remains are resting at the McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou, where visitation will be held Sunday, February 14th from 2-4 p.m. followed by a funeral service in the chapel, with Rev. Steven Webb officiating. Interment will take place immediately after the service in Seaview Cemetery, where she will be buried next to her husband John, whom she lost 32 years ago.
