It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of Gerald ‘Jerry’ Burns, at home surrounded by his loving family on April 15, 2013.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Neil Burns and Alice MacQueen.
Jerry was a life member of the Elks of Canada, and loved to spend his time at Mackinnon’s Camp Ground in Lake Ainslie. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed playing tarabish, but he always found time to root for his favourite hockey team, the Toronto Maple Leafs.
He was employed as a millwright with the Sydney Steel Plant.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Myrtle (Harris); daughters, Shelley (John) Cunningham, Tantallon, and Debbie Burns, Howie Centre; sons, George (Tom) Burns, Louisbourg, and Kerry Burns, Dartmouth; grandchildren, Jerry, Jacquelyn, Marc, Amber, Taylor, Jessica and Vince. He is also survived by brothers, Dougie MacQueen, Donkin, and Phillip (Dale) MacQueen, Broughton; and several nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 18, 2013, at 11 a.m. in the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home Chapel, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the cancer center or the palliative care unit.
