Anna Catherine Josephine ‘Catherine’ MacIntyre, 97, a resident of Parkland Clayton Park, Halifax, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 21.
Born in 1915 on the family farm in Big Pond Centre, Cape Breton, Catherine was the daughter of Edwin and Jane (MacLellan) MacIntyre. After graduating from Nova Scotia Normal College she taught school in Irish Vale, Johnstown, Boisdale and MacKinnon’s Harbour in Cape Breton before moving to Halifax in 1942. Catherine retired from St. Francis School in 1978. She was a faithful member of Canadian Martyr’s Church in Halifax and for many years volunteered as a Eucharistic Minister to the patients at the Victoria General Hospital. Catherine was a regular visitor to Big Pond, the Amherst Shore and Port Hawkesbury. Over the years she maintained a strong connection with her extended family and was much loved by her many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Margaret MacIntyre (Thomas) in Truro, Mary MacIntyre (Hugh), Ontario.
Catherine was the last member of her immediate family and was predeceased by eight brothers Roderick, Hector, Michael, Hugh, Thomas, Alex, Duncan and Pius (in infancy), three sisters Angela (John Murdock) MacKinnon, Hilda (Duncan) MacPherson and Margaret ‘Madge’ (Jim) Campbell and her long-time dear friend Margaret Kneeland.
The family would like to thank the staff of the 3rd floor, Drummond Hall for their compassionate care and kindness to Aunt Catherine while she was a resident there.
Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. on Saturday, April 27 at St. Mary’s Church, Big Pond, followed by funeral Mass at 11 a.m. with Fr. Joe Gillis officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
