It is with great sadness that we, the family announce the passing of Gerald ‘Soogie’ Clarke, age 77, a resident of Jackson Drive, on Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010 at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Bras d’Or on Feb. 29, 1932, Dad was the eldest son of the late Harvey and Jenny (Young) Clarke, Bras d’Or. Dad was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the Princess Patricia Light Infantry of the Canadian Army. He was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #19, North Sydney. Until his retirement, he was employed as a firefighter with the Department of National Defense in Point Edward. He was a former member of the Seaview Golf and Country Club and enjoyed spending his time cheering on his precious grandchildren in their many activities.
Dad enjoyed his weekly ventures to Rollie’s for fish chowder and a few games. Dad cherished his memories of growing up in the Shacks in Bras d’Or and the fun times had with friends and relatives there. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney.
Dad is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Betty (Butts) Clarke; his children, Jerry (Peggy), Dartmouth, Stephen (Angela), North Sydney and the apple of his eye, Kelly (Jody), North Sydney. Grandfather will be loved forever by his grandchildren, Jerry (Erin), Nick, Meaghan, Alana, Stephen, Grahame and Renee and by his great-grandchildren, Dylan, Mason and by two great-grandchildren due in the summer of 2010. Dad is also survived by his sisters Eva MacLellan, Bras d’Or, and Barbara Ann (James) Proctor, Glace Bay and by his nieces and nephews, his uncle Dave Young, Sydney Mines, and by his sidekick Molly the cat.
Besides his parents, Dad was predeceased by his brothers, Robert ‘Baba’ and John ‘Donnie’; by his sister, Eileen ‘Sis’ Royal, and by his brother-in-law, Gussie MacLellan.
Visitation for Gerald will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Jim Attwood officiating. Burial will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Family flowers only. Memorial donations made be made to a charity of choice or the Northside Civic Center.
