It is with sadness that the family of Hugh Daniel MacPhee announces his passing at Taigh Na Mara Veterans Home on Sunday, June 09, 2013.
Born in Glace Bay on September 19, 1920, Hugh was the son of the late John (Jack) and Sara (MacDougall) MacPhee.
In 1939, Hugh enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army Signal Corps where he served until 1945. Hugh married the love of his life, Olga Tomiczek of Dominion in 1947. They were married for 47 years until Olga's death in 1994. After the war, Hugh enrolled in St. Francis Xavier University and then went on to Nova Scotia Technical College where he received a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering. Hugh was a life time member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia. He was an avid golfer and long time member of Ashburn Golf Club in Halifax, where Hugh lived for most of his adult life. Hugh spent most of his professional career with the Government of Canada closing out his career after 35 years of service as a regional manager for the Department of Public Works. The Catholic Religion was an important part of Hugh's life. In 1993, he received the Honours of the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus.
Hugh is survived by his daughter Shirley (Stephen) of Halifax and granddaughters Jocelyn (Dave) Druken of Ottawa and Alison (Mark) Dolmont of Vancouver; his sisters-in-law, Clara MacPhee of Glace Bay and Patricia MacPhee of Wilmington, MA and many nieces and nephews including Danny Gillis (Catherine) of Ontario, who was raised as part of the family. We would also like to extend special thanks to Hugh's niece, Leann MacLeod, who has been outstanding in her dedication to her "Uncle Hughie." Her love and patience has been much appreciated over the years.
Hugh was predeceased by an infant son, John Hugh, as well as his siblings, Malcolm (Monica), Allan, Annie (Lincoln), Norman (Pat), Elizabeth (Greg), Kathleen (John), Frances (Clara) and Gerard (Betty).
Hugh's one wish late in life was to spend his remaining years in Cape Breton. After living in Dominion for several years, he moved to Taigh Na Mara. The family wishes to thank the staff at Taigh Na Mara for their compassion and care especially during Hugh's last days.
There will be no visitation. Arrangements are entrusted to Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main Street, Glace Bay. According to Hugh's wishes, cremation has taken place. A funeral mass will held on Tuesday, July 2, at 10 a.m. in Holy Cross Church. The Rev Norman MacPhee will be officiating. His remains will be laid to rest next to his dear wife Olga in St. Eugene's Cemetery in Dominion. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.jmcurryfuneralhome.com
