Clinton Guptill

GUPTILL, CAPTAIN CLINTON EARL - Captain Guptill’s voyage was completed on June 10th 2013, as the Great Pilot safely guided him to anchor in the Haven of Rest, he will sail the wide sea no more. He was a lot of things to many people but to us he was a loving husband and dad. He was born October 24, 1937 at Grand Harbour, Grand Manan, the son of the late Zelia (Wilson) and Ralph Guptill. From early childhood he developed a love for the sea. He obtained his Master's Certificate in 1975, and was employed in the offshore oil industry. However, he enjoyed the greatest satisfaction when commanding tugboats, especially while performing deep sea salvage work. This afforded him the opportunity to call at many ports around the world. It was in salvage work that he received recognition of the highest order for life saving from the Saint John Ambulance Society at Government House in Halifax. Without regard for his personal safety, and that of his vessel, he and his crew rescued the M.V. Pal Wind which was drifting perilously close to the Newfoundland coast in hurricane force winds. As a result of this action the lives of 32 seamen were saved. Further he received an award from Transport Canada for the rescue and salvage of the M.V. Amphion in 1996. He is survived by his faithful wife Judith (Avery), his children Robert (Jocelyn), Andrea (Randy), Timothy (Gayla), his twin brother Burton (Elizabeth) and sister Helen. He is predeceased by his parents, brother Keith and sister Bernice. He was a lifelong member of the Gideon's of Canada and a past member of the Company of Master Mariners. He loved his family and when not on the water found great joy in his grandchildren, Jonathon, Jacqueline, Ashley, Jacob, Hope, Rachel, Autumn and his little "twin" Matthew.
Arrangements are under the care of Fundy Funeral Home, Saint John, NB (646-2424). Cremation has taken place and we will honour Clinton with a memorial service at the North Head Wesleyan Church on Saturday, June 15th at 1p.m. The family extends an open invitation to all.
