It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the sudden passing of David Fowler of 9th Street, Glace Bay on Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Dominion, David was the son of the late Jack and Christina (MacDonald) Fowler.
David was a member of St. Johns Church. He worked in the coal mines for 33 years, retiring from Phalen Colliery. David loved shooting darts, bowling and watching his favourite hockey team, the Detroit Red Wings. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus, Glace Bay, as well as the Glace Bay Pensioners Club. At one time he bowled with the pensioners in the Colliery League at Knox Hall, Glace Bay. David was a very friendly man who loved his family dearly and was always there to lend a helping hand.
David is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 54 years, Joan (Nearing) Fowler; three daughters, Margaret (Bob) Mitchell, Viola Bruffatto, Glace Bay, Georgina(Shawn) Neville, Ontario; two sons, Joe (Sheila), Ontario, David, Dominion; one sister, Margaret (Duke) Schneider, Ontario; two brothers, Larry, Hamilton, and Willie, Boston.
David is survived by his pride and joy in life, his 12 grandchildren, Ashley, David, Edmund, Alana, Justin, Leanne, Colin, Michael, Jennifer, Amanda, Christopher, Gillian and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving are nieces, nephews and his sister-in-law, Georgina Fowler.
Besides his parents, David was predeceased by his son, John James Fowler, grandson, Lloyd Canavan, four brothers, Francis, Duncan, Melvin, Johnny, one sister, Lucy and his father and mother-in-law, James and Margaret Nearing.
Visitation will be on Sunday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home , 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass, officiated by Rev. Leo Boone is Monday at 2 p.m. in St. Anne’s Church followed by interment in the parish cemetery. All are welcome to join the family for a reception in the church foyer.
