NEW GLASGOW – Harold Walter Lowe, age 90, of New Glasgow, passed away Friday, July 26, 2013 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
Born and educated in River Hebert, he was the son of the late Walter and Mary (Walters) Lowe.
He served during the Second World War joining the RCNVR in Halifax in 1942. He saw action with North Atlantic convoy duty in Londondary, St. John’s, Halifax and the English Channel, which cleared shipping lanes for D-Day. He was discharged in 1945. In 2010 he received the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation Award. He was a retired special service foreman with Maritime Tel and Tel, retiring in 1981 after 40 years of service. He was a former member of choir and session of St. James United Church, Antigonish, and was on the honor roll of the Antigonish Volunteer Fire Dept. He was a member of Trinity United Church and the Session, Trinitarian Choir, Legion Choir, Stellarton Male Chorus, and a life member of Telephone Pioneers of America and Bell Aliant Pioneers. He was a member and Past President of Branch 34, Royal Canadian Legion and a charter member and Past President of Admiral Murray Branch, Royal Canadian Naval Association.
He is survived by his children: Nancy (John “J.D.”) MacKenzie; Charles (Mary); Aldren (Paula); grandchildren: Paul, Darryl, Jeffrey, Allison, Heidi, Christen, Jaime, Tanya and Brittany; 12 great-grandchildren; special companion Lillian MacLeod.
He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years Leona (Arbuckle) in 2004; sister Muriel.
Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service 2 p.m. Monday in Trinity United Church with Rev. Dr. Jim Shaffner officiating. Burial will be in Abercrombie Cemetery.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Aberdeen Palliative Care Society, Trinity United Church, Royal Canadian Legion Br. 34 or a charity of choice.
Royal Canadian Legion and Royal Canadian Naval Association will meet at the funeral home at 6:30 p.m. Sunday to conduct their service.
